About the new Outline Planning Application
Barking Riverside Ltd (BRL) have submitted a New Outline Planning Application to the Council (London Borough of Barking & Dagenham) at the end of July 2024. The application reference number is: 24/01141/OUTALL
The new Outline Planning Application has been submitted to evolve and refresh the existing masterplan – which includes elements which are now over 16 years old – ensuring it can be flexible and sustainable, whilst delivering more vitally needed homes in Barking & Dagenham. The new Outline Planning Application proposes additional homes at Barking Riverside, taking the overall size of the neighbourhood to 20,000 homes. This supports the Council’s emerging Local Plan.
A new Outline Planning Application, and a revised masterplan for Barking Riverside, has the potential to deliver a range of public benefits:
- Enhanced green spaces, including new green “connections” to the river.
- Improved opportunities for sport, recreation & play.
- Ensuring that each neighbourhood has a distinct identity.
- Better responding to our unique riverfront – improving access, providing new amenities, enhancing ecology and creating new flood defences.
- Providing two additional primary schools, maintaining high standards of education.
- Enhancing our ecology and environment, with at least a 10% improvement in biodiversity.
- Improving connectivity in and around Barking Riverside, including some revised bus, car and pedestrian routes.
- Creating a greener and more sustainable future, with the decarbonisation of the district heating network.
January – February 2024 – First round of engagement
Back in January and February, we ran an initial programme of engagement sessions to launch the new Outline Planning Application to the community. May – June 2024 – Second round of engagement
The Second round of engagement was held in May and June 2024. As part of this second round, BRL have:
- Shared residents responses to the initial surveys and polls
- In light of the feedback received, shared further information and design work demonstrating how the New Outline Planning Application has responded to the priorities that were highlighted
- Clearly communicated some of the commitments that BRL would make as part of the New Outline Planning Application
- Provided more information on the planning process and structure, together with the “next steps”.
